The relations between NATO’s member states – what do they say about NATO’s future? These relations are particularly important today as the attack against Ukraine has put NATO’s whole existence at risk. This article seeks to explain how established patterns, dependencies and interests among the member states have impacted their policies and cooperation during a period that has been dominated by the reaction against Russia and aid to Ukraine. Their policies give evidence of strong support but also considerable differences between countries. The future of NATO will be determined by many factors, in Europe as well as on a transatlantic and global level, but also by other organizations. Ultimately, however, the relationship between the member states of NATO and their relationships with the organization will be decisive for NATO’s future.
