The Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences has slightly more than 400 members, who, together, represent all branches of Sweden’s total defence structure. New members are elected annually in April. The Academy’s statutes stipulate that there should be a maximum of 160 elected members who are younger than seventy years of age. This implies that when a member turns seventy, his or her seat becomes “vacant” so that a new member may be elected to the Academy.

Liable for election to the Academy is any Swedish citizen who is known for his or her good services within the scope of the Academy’s activities and who is assessed as having the will and the ability to take part in the Academy’s activities.

Citizens of foreign countries can become members if they are noted for prominent achievements within the scope of the Academy’s activities.
